Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an upcoming superhero comedy film based on the video game franchise published by Sega. It is the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog and is once again directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington. Ben Schwartz reprises his role as the voice of Sonic, alongside Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Tom and Maddie Wachowski; Idris Elba joins as Knuckles. Months after the first film, Dr. Robotnik returns from a mushroom planet while Sonic meets Tails.

Following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), and with plans for a film series, Paramount Pictures announced the sequel in May 2020. Filming took place from March to June 2021 in Vancouver and Hawaii. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is scheduled for release in the United States on April 8, 2022, by Paramount Pictures in association with Sega Sammy Group.

Premise [edit]

After defeating Dr. Robotnik and banishing him to a planet full of mushrooms, Sonic is ready for more freedom, as Tom and Maddie agree to let him stay home while they go on vacation. However, Dr. Robotnik, now known as Dr. Eggman, returns from the mushroom planet with a new partner, Knuckles, in search of an emerald that can give the power to build and destroy civilizations. Now, Sonic and his newfound friend Tails embark on a journey to find the emerald before it falls into Robotnik's hands.[3]

Cast [edit]

Voice cast [edit]

  • Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog:
An anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds. Sonic settles on Earth as a new member of the Wachowski family with Tom and Maddie after defeating his arch-nemesis, Dr. Robotnik, in the first film. With Tom and Maddie on vacation, Sonic meets Tails and embarks on a journey to find the emerald of great power before Robotnik and Knuckles can.[1] [3]
  • Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna:
A serious, yet gullible, anthropomorphic red echidna who is a determined treasure hunter. Though aggressive and short tempered in nature, Knuckles is an experienced formidable fighter with super strength and gifted with the ability to glide and climb walls. Having been duped by Eggman into joining him, he comes to Earth seeking an emerald of great power.[1] [3]

Live-action cast [edit]

  • Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik / Dr. Eggman:
A mad scientist and Sonic's arch-nemesis, whose goal was to capture Sonic and use his super-speed for world domination, but was instead defeated by the blue hedgehog and also had any evidence/records of his existence subsequently erased by the U.S. government. Now more insane than before as a result of being stranded on the mushroom planet for nearly three months, he pledges to return to Earth, get revenge on Sonic and achieve his newfound dreams of world conquest. Eggman teams up with Knuckles to find the emerald, knowing that he is only using him to achieve his goal.[4]
  • James Marsden as Thomas Michael "Tom" Wachowski: The sheriff of Green Hills, Montana, who helped Sonic recover his rings and defeat Eggman in the first film.[5]
  • Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski: Tom's veterinarian wife who helped Sonic and Tom to put a stop to Eggman in the first film.[5]
  • Adam Pally as Wade Whipple: Tom's chief deputy.[5]
  • Natasha Rothwell as Rachel: Maddie's older sister who dislikes Tom.[1]
  • Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone: Eggman's former assistant. Stone has taken his boss's place after Sonic defeated and sent him to the mushroom planet.[6]

Additionally, the character of Miles "Tails" Prower will appear, an anthropomorphic yellow-orange two tailed fox who is Sonic's sidekick and best friend. He previously appeared in the mid-credits scene of the first film, where he was voiced by Colleen Villard. Shemar Moore will appear in an undisclosed role.[7]

Production [edit]

Development [edit]

By April 2020, Marsden had expressed his interest in a sequel featuring several characters from the video games, including Tails, who appeared in a mid-credits scene in the first film.[8] Director Jeff Fowler also expressed interest in developing a sequel that focused on Sonic and Tails' friendship and further developed Dr. Robotnik.[9] Later that month, Schwartz said that he felt it made sense for Paramount Pictures to not have announced a sequel by that point due to the COVID-19 pandemic, also adding that he was interested in a sequel featuring Tails and a more game-accurate portrayal of Robotnik.[10] Later that month, Sonic the Hedgehog co-writer Pat Casey revealed that there had been talks about a sequel, though the film had not been greenlit by Paramount by that point.[11] He also said that Carrey was interested in wearing a fat suit in a sequel to more closely resemble Robotnik's video game appearance.[11] Casey also hinted that a sequel could feature Sonic's "Super Sonic" form and the Chaos Emeralds from the video games, also expressing a desire to introduce the character of Knuckles the Echidna, whose existence was hinted at with the echidna tribe seen during the first film's opening sequence.[11]

In May, Paramount Pictures confirmed that a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog was in development, with Fowler set to return as director alongside writers Casey and Josh Miller.[12] Neal H. Mortiz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara will produce the sequel, having previously co-produced the first film alongside Takeshi Ito, while Tim Miller, Hajime Satomi, and Haruki Satomi will return from the first film as executive producers.[12]

In December, it was confirmed by storyboard artist Fill Marc that artist Tyson Hesse, who redesigned the character of Sonic in the first film, would return.[13] The film's title was officially announced as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in February 2021.[14] In March 2021, it was reported that Moving Picture Company will provide VFX for Sonic the Hedgehog 2.[15] In May, a synopsis of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 's story was released as Paramount submitted a patent to the U.S. Copyright Office catalog.[3]

Casting [edit]

On January 27, 2020, Jim Carrey expressed interest in starring in a sequel, feeling that his character, the villain Dr. Robotnik, could be expanded in the sequel: "I wouldn't mind going to do another one because it was so much fun, first of all, and a real challenge to try to convince people that I have a triple-digit IQ... There is so much room, you know, Robotnik has not reached his apotheosis."[16] On March 6, 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog star James Marsden confirmed that he had signed on for multiple sequels.[17]

On January 26, 2021, Tika Sumpter announced that she would reprise her role as Maddie Wachowski.[18] In March 2021, Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey were announced to be reprising their roles as Sonic and Robotnik respectively.[5] [4] In April 2021, James Marsden was confirmed to return as Tom Wachowski.[5] [4] On June 16, 2021, it was announced that Shemar Moore had joined the cast in an undisclosed role.[7] [19] On August 10, 2021, it was announced that Idris Elba had officially joined the cast as the voice of Knuckles the Echidna.[1]

Filming [edit]

In December 2020, it was reported that the BC Film Commission had listed that the production of the film would occur from March 15 to May 10, 2021, under the working title Emerald Hill, a reference to the opening zone in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game.[20] In January 2021, Tika Sumpter revealed that the film would shoot in both Vancouver and Hawaii.[18]

Principal photography began in Vancouver on March 15, 2021, with Brandon Trost serving as cinematographer.[5] As a way to show his gratitude to the crew, Carrey held a raffle on May 7 in order to give away a Chevrolet Blazer; the car was eventually given to a grip.[21] Filming in Vancouver concluded on May 12, 2021.[22] Filming wrapped in Hawaii on June 25, 2021.[23]
